About this distance

NPS states the Wonderland Trail is approximately 93 miles (149.7 km) circling Mount Rainier. Far shows the real OSM-traced route geometry (relation 4111743): 137.5 km, an ~8% gap. Root-caused 2026-07-27 (see D171): measured OSM relation 4111743 directly (all 82 member ways, summed via haversine) and confirmed the gap is in OpenStreetMap's own mapping, not an importer or simplification bug -- most likely unmapped connector/spur segments in this long backcountry loop. Live re-verified again 2026-07-27: re-fetched relation 4111743 and reproduced the stored route byte-for-byte (509 points, 92.5% true haversine retention vs. the fresh chain's own 137.5 km length), confirming the simplification math is not the issue either. Since OSM's mapping is genuinely short here, Far shows the authoritative NPS distance (149.7 km) while the drawn route intentionally stays at OSM's real (shorter) geometry -- they will not visually match until the OSM relation's gaps are filled by a mapper. Correct tradeoff (hikers should see the official distance), disclosed here so it is not mistaken for a bug.
